NGC: industrial gearbox selection starts at the driven machine

NGC's MHB platform covers helical and bevel-helical industrial gearboxes. For a conveyor, mixer or lifting drive, the useful question is how a selected unit fits the machine's load, installation and maintenance conditions. This profile connects the published MHB range to a concrete retrofit example and the information an engineer needs for a quotation.

A standard platform with application-specific choices

The official MHB page describes a modular range with helical and bevel-helical layouts, multiple output arrangements and application accessories. It lists conveyors, bucket elevators, lifting equipment, rotary kilns, mixers and dryers among the intended applications. This is an industrial transmission platform; it should not be confused with NGC's separate wind-turbine or precision robot-reducer lines.

NGC publishes an MHB family torque envelope of 2–1,400 kN·m and a ratio envelope of 1.25–450. In newton-metres the torque envelope is 2,000–1,400,000 Nm. Neither endpoint specifies a usable frame, shaft or operating condition. Ask for the selected unit's mechanical rating and thermal calculation at your actual input speed rather than ordering against the family maximum.

A conveyor retrofit: the installation can determine the project

In a June 2020 manufacturer case study, NGC describes supplying MHB reducers for TISCO's No. 5 blast-furnace feeding and slag conveyors. The account identifies two MH3S180 units on the main conveyor and explains an adaptation that retained the original installation dimensions. This is a dated NGC account of a specific project, not evidence that every present-day MHB unit is an interchangeable replacement.

The practical lesson for a buyer is to treat the base, coupling and driven shaft as part of the selection. For an existing drive, provide a measured drawing showing anchor centres, shaft heights, coupling engagement, motor position and belt-drum connection. A compatible ratio is only one item on that drawing. A joint base or adapter may be needed, and the supplier should identify who designs it and who checks its stiffness and alignment.

For a dusty conveyor, put sealing, breather location and access to the oil system into the enquiry. For a mixer, specify shaft loads and the support arrangement; for a lifting mechanism, identify braking and load-holding requirements. These are different engineering reviews even when each starts with the same modular catalog.

Three items to resolve before comparing quotations

Mechanical selection

State continuous and peak torque, peak duration, load reversals, starts per hour and operating hours. Ask the supplier to return a named MHB configuration and the service-factor basis. A gearbox selected for a steady conveyor is not automatically suitable for repeated loaded starts.

Thermal and lubrication selection

Supply ambient temperature, mounting orientation and available cooling. Agree the lubricant specification, cooling equipment where required, first-fill responsibility and accessible service points. Have the supplier distinguish a mechanical load rating from the thermal limit.

Replacement and commissioning

Request the outline and shaft drawings with your measured interface attached. Agree alignment checks, rotation direction, foundation requirements and commissioning records before shipping; these decisions can affect both the gearbox and the surrounding equipment.

Make your NGC enquiry a machine-level brief

An existing drive drawing and load history are more useful than an isolated maximum-torque request.
