Newstart: start with the motor drawing, then select the planetary gearbox

Newstart's AB family is useful to investigate when a servo or stepper motor needs a compact reduction stage. The official drawing library separates inline AB, right-angle ABR and TAB configurations, with multiple motor-side interfaces within the same frame. A frame number alone is not an orderable assembly.

One frame, several motor connections

The official AB page provides separate PDF and CAD entries. These examples retain the complete drawing labels; dimensions and fits must be read from the selected drawing, not inferred from the name.

The letter i remains a ratio placeholder in these drawing names. Specify the numerical reduction ratio and obtain a confirmed full order code.

Choose the shaft layout before comparing precision

Inline AB arrangement

Use the inline drawing to check whether the motor and gearbox fit the available axial envelope. On a carriage or moving axis, include the motor cable exit and access for shaft-clamp tightening, not just the gearbox body length.

Right-angle ABR arrangement

If the motor cannot sit on the output axis, compare the ABR drawing. Recheck the motor envelope and output interface; a right-angle alternative is a different assembly, not an AB unit turned through 90 degrees.

TAB configuration

The same official page has a separate TAB drawing section. Select the drawing for the intended mounting architecture before specifying its ratio or accuracy grade. Ask Newstart to identify the complete assembly in the quotation.

Backlash is one input to an axis design

For a reversing positioning axis, prepare the acceleration profile, output inertia, peak and continuous torque, required cycle time and permissible positioning error. A motor's peak torque and a gearbox's nominal torque are different quantities. Have the supplier check the operating cycle against the chosen ratio and frame.

Treat a backlash grade as a configuration-specific specification. Include the grade in the order code and ask for its measurement condition. The drawing library contains P2 labels; that does not mean every drawing or stage arrangement has the same angular allowance. Use the actual catalog row for the final gearbox.

An axis error budget also includes torsional deflection, couplings, mounting stiffness and the driven mechanism. For a belt pulley or pinion mounted directly on the output, send the force, overhang and load direction. A good motor fit does not establish the output bearing capacity.
